- Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1600s)-first person to use a microscope to
identify living things.
- Robert Hooke (1665)- published a book of drawings of various things seen
under a microscope. He was the
first to use the word cells to describe the chambers he saw.
- Robert Brown-discovered an object near the center of the cell that we
now call the nucleus.

- Compound Light Microscope- used most commonly in lab settings. Can magnify up to 1000 times.
|
|
4
|
- Discovered in the 1920s. Objects
must be placed in a vacum
- Can magnify up to 1000 times more than a light microscope.
- Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)- shines a beam of electrons
through an object.
|
|
5
|
- Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)- Uses a beam of electrons to scan the
surface of an object.
- Scanning Tunneling Microscope-
Invented in the 1980s. Use a
probe to scan the surface of an object.
Can be used with living things.

- Matthias Schleiden, Robert Virchow, and Robert Brown all contributed to
the formation of the cell theory, which states:
- 1. All living things are
composed of cells.
- 2. Cells are the smallest
working units of living things.
- 3. All cells come from
preexisting cells by cell division.

- The purpose is to separate and protect the cell from its surroundings.
- It is made up of a lipid bilayer.
- It also has carbohydrate chains, and membrane proteins found throughout
the membrane.
