PAK 3-Cells and Cell Transport
  • Biology I and Pre AP Biology I
2
The Advent of the Microscope
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1600s)-first person to use a microscope to identify living things.
  • Robert Hooke (1665)- published a book of drawings of various things seen under a microscope.  He was the first to use the word cells to describe the chambers he saw.
  • Robert Brown-discovered an object near the center of the cell that we now call the nucleus.

3
Modern Microscopes
  • Compound Light Microscope- used most commonly in lab settings.  Can magnify up to 1000 times.
4
Electron Microscopes
  • Discovered in the 1920s.  Objects must be placed in a vacum
  • Can magnify up to 1000 times more than a light microscope.
  • Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)- shines a beam of electrons through an object.
5
Microscopes
  • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)- Uses a beam of electrons to scan the surface of an object.
  • Scanning Tunneling  Microscope- Invented in the 1980s.  Use a probe to scan the surface of an object.  Can be used with living things.
6
The Cell Theory
  • Matthias Schleiden, Robert Virchow, and Robert Brown all contributed to the formation of the cell theory, which states:
    • 1.  All living things are composed of cells.
    • 2.  Cells are the smallest working units of living things.
    • 3.  All cells come from preexisting cells by cell division.
7
Cell Membrane
  • The purpose is to separate and protect the cell from its surroundings.
  • It is made up of a lipid bilayer.
  • It also has carbohydrate chains, and membrane proteins found throughout the membrane.
8
Inside the Cell
  • Nucleus
    • What is the purpose of the nucleus?
    • What are the parts of the nucleus?
    • What is everything found outside the nucleus found in?
9
Inside the Cell
  • Ribosomes
    • What is their purpose in the cell?
10

Inside the Cell
  • Mitochondria
    • What is the function of this organelle?
    • What types of cells would you find many mitochondria?
    • Found in BOTH animal and plant cells.

Types of Transport
  • Passive Transport
    • Diffusion-Movement of substances from high to low concentration.
    • Osmosis-Movement of water from high to low concentration.
    • Facilitated Diffusion- Movement of substances thorough the use of protein channels.
  • Active Transport
    • Sodium Potassium Pump
    • Endocytosis
    • Exocytosis
    • Where are they found?
